Chapter 13: Crisis

Marquis Blackwell

(2 days later)

I knew Prince Zephyr had a thing for the human reporter, but to help her escape and run away with her? What a fool! His pathetic act of frivolous love was the hammer to strike the final nail on the head and seal his coffin. Conspiring with and protecting an enemy was treasonous, not to mention the prince knowingly acted against the council.

I had thought it would take a lot of effort to take him down, considering how he and the Oryms were respected. Dragging him down the ranks was my ultimate goal. Thanks to the prince himself, I had what I needed to get him banished from the clan! The Orym reign proved humans only made elves foolish and blind, and it was time for the Blackwell name to rise.

The news of Prince Zephyr disappearing with the human threatening to expose elves traveled like wildfire. A clan meeting was called, and the clan’s panic was all I needed to reposition myself in the hierarchy. No elf was missing as the meeting began, except the prince. Even Duke Domstrom was present, sitting beside our ‘great’ vӧlva. I had once thought Giselle would be one to lead a revolution of separating the clan from human involvement. But her indifference to allowing Duke Domstrom’s human lover, his now pregnant wife, into the clan showed just how far the clan’s leadership was falling.

This would have never happened if I were king.

King Häldrun retired decades ago after the death of the queen. Elves lived so long compared to humans that an elves’ death was shocking. The king never emotionally recovered after losing his beloved wife. He passed the throne to his promising son, retreating to the countryside to live in relative solitude.

The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree, King Häldrun. Your son is just as emotional as you.

The clan meeting was disorderly, and the vÓ§lva tried to calm the clan down. Members demanded the prince be removed from power, and others believed Phoebe Hall should still have a trial to share her thoughts. Both sides questioned what would happen now that Prince Zephyr and Phoebe Hall were missing.

Raising my voice above the noise, I called everyone’s attention. “Exactly how long must we wait to watch our clan fall apart?”

Elves simmered down, looking at me. The vÓ§lva and Duke Domstrom eyed me with suspicion.

I continued, seizing the opportunity to get the clan on my side. “How long have we fought the Thallan clan, and recently in open battle to protect humans? And how long have our powers continued to weaken because of the destructiveness of humans in this fragile, mortal realm?”

After a pause, I continued, “Humans have consistently been a problem in our way of life, in our path of rebuilding our strength and powers. And how does our leadership respond?” I raised my voice, “By mating with humans and diluting our bloodlines.”

From the corner of my eyes, I saw the angry Duke Domstrom being held back by the vÓ§lva.
